June 29, 2010 - We rented a car today so we could explore the island a bit. We set out in the morning to find the "black beach." In Santorini, there is a black beach, a red beach and a white beach. The roads on Santorini have no names, so reading a map is challenging. Of course, we set out on the wrong path to the beach, but we quickly realized it and headed in the right direction to Kamari beach. The black sand was amazing, impossible to walk on without sandals, but amazing! We quickly found some beach chairs to call our own and camped out for the afternoon. The town was great - a beach town like back home, but this time the scenery was like no beach anywhere in the U.S. We had gyros for lunch - we've probably each eaten gyros a dozen times since we've been in Greece! Gyros quickly became Tommy's favorite lunch! All of us went swimming in the sea (Nicholas wouldn't stop calling it an ocean!) The water was clear and beautiful. We managed to stick some of the black sand in a bag to take home with us. It was a great afternoon.
We made our way back to the hotel to shower and get ready for the evening. We decided to explore another part of the island for dinner. We took the journey to the northern part of the island and the town of Oia. We had pizza at a great restaurant there and watched the sunset. The town was quite a bit smaller than Fira, where our hotel is, but it's very nice there. We came home and called it a night.
